An interdisciplinary, community–centered project focused on using art to activate the public memory of women, like Sally Hemings, whose lives have been erased or marginalized.
Through research and dialog with local and national communities where SALLY exhibitions and events take place, the project has reactivated the lives of forgotten or marginalized women through an expanding archive of biographical information. The biographies are used by artists, writers and performers as inspiration for new work included in SALLY exhibitions. Each woman’s story is printed on a 3” x 5” card and used as exhibition labels or handed out to the public at SALLY events.
